Simplipal
is located in the centre of Mayurbhanj district of Orissa.
The Simlipal National Park, one of the earliest to come
under Project Tiger. It has spread over an area of 2,750
sq kms. It was declared as one of the nine tiger project
reserves in the country in 1973. It was declared a sanctury
in 1979. It is home to panthers, tigers, gaur bison, antelopes,
sambar, mouse deer - the tiniest of the deer family, mugger
or crocodiles, and more than 223 species of birds. |
The
beauty of the park brings the person into the state
of hypnotic sleep. It is a god gift to this sanctuary.
It would take several days to go around the park. The
glory of the park is increased by the water falls, tribal
settlements and mountain peaks. The park is open for
visitors from November to June. |

October to early June.
PROMINENT FAUNA
Panthers, tigers, gaur bison, antelopes, sambar, mouse
deer - the mugger or crocodiles, Leopards, Sambars, Langurs,
Barking and Spotted Deer, Gaur, Elephant, 'four horned'
antelope, red Jungle Fowl, Hill Myana, Peafowl, Alexandrine
Parakaat, Crested Serpent Eagle are common. The Grey Hornbill,
Indian Pied Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill and Indian
Trogon are also found in the reserve, mammals and bird
species, reptiles which includes snakes and turtles.
HOW TO GET THERE
To visit the park one has to go to Baripada for collecting
the entry permit form for the park. From Baripada one
can go to the Jashipur which is 95km from Baripada. It
is also the second entry point for the park
