GIR NATIONAL PARK


This park is spread over an area of about 1412.13sq. Km. This Gir forest is a heaven to Asiatic lion, about 300 Asiatic lions are living over here. But unfortunately this is their last surviving generation.

Apart from the lion other prominent fauna of the area includes leopards, wild ass, numerous chital, nilgai, chinkara, four horned antelope, wild boar, numerous birds like paradise flycatcher, Bonneli's eagle, crested serpent eagle, woodpeckers flamingo etc.

The park is consist of rugged terrain and rocky hillside, which are covered with deciduous forests. This park is closed during monsoon till mid October.

Leopard, chital, nilgai, chinkara, antelope, wild boar, crocodile, wild ass, paradise flycatcher, Asiatic lion, Back headed cuckoo, pied woodpecker, Bonnelli's eagle, grey partridges, crested serpent eagle, painted sandgrouse, bush quail, flamingo.

HOW TO GET THERE

One can find the nearest railhead Sasan Gir which is 1 km from the national park. The nearest town is Veraval from where park can be approached by road. The nearest airport is at Keshod.
