DUDHWA
NATIONAL PARK
In
the state of Uttar Pradesh, at the base of the Himalayas
the Paltidun valley is located the Corbett National Park
which was established in 1936, as the Hailey National
Park. India's first National Park lies at the foothills
of Himalayas and spreads over an area of 520 sq. kms along
the banks of Ramganga river. The tigers are the main attraction
of the park, and Ramganga is the home of prehistoric reptiles
too, whereas the other carnivorous include the Leopard,
Bear, Hog, Sambar, Muntjac, Fox, etc. Over 50 mammals,
580 birds and 25 reptile species have been listed in the
Corbett National Park. Birds such as Ducks, Snipe, Egrets,
Herons, Spotted Eagle, Harrier, Woodpecker, Darter, Cormorants
and Thrushes and the lake of the park also attracts a
large number of other species of water birds.

The other animals
found in large numbers, are the Indian one-horned rhinoceros
and the wild elephant. Among reptiles, pythons and monitor
lizards are fairly common. Dudhwa is also a bird-watcher's
paradise. Dudhwa, perhaps, houses the greatest number
of owls and storks. Also, found in plenty, are the great
Indian horned owl, the forest eagle owl, the brown fish
owl, the tawny owl, the dusky horned owl, the scops owl,
brown wood owl and the jungle owlet. |
A
variety of colourful birds like woodpeckers,
orioles, pittas, kingfishers, minivets and sunbirds also
inhabit this Park. In a bid to save the Indian one-horned
rhinoceros, seven rhinos from Assam and Nepal were introduced
into Dudhwa in 1984-85. Presently, 13 rhinos can be spotted
in Dudhwa.
