Dachigam is located just 22km away from Srinagar.
Dachigam park is easily accessible with its beautiful
and magnificent greenery. Dachigam park has the two sectors
the Upper and the Lower which incorporate a variety of
vegetation like riverain forest, grass land, broad leaved
woodland, coniferous forest, barerock faces and alpine
pastures.
This
National Park has spread over an area of 141 Sq. Km, spanning
heights between 5,500 to 14,000 feet above sea level.
The park is home to the endangered Hangul or the Kashmir
Stag, the only species of Red Deer to be found in India.
Since 10 villages were relocated outside the boundaries
of the reserves between 1910 and 1934, it, thus, got its
name Dachi-gam which means 'Ten Villages'. Dachigam is
one of India's most scenically beautiful wildlife reserves.
BEST
TIME TO VISIT
May to August for upper Dachigam and September to December
for lower Dachigam. The park is closed between January
and April.
PROMINENT FAUNA
Hangul (Kashmir-Stag), Himalayan black bear, leopard,
musk deer, Himalayan marmot, species of wild goats, variety
of exotic Himalayan birds, pheasants, golden eagle, bearded
vulture.
HOW TO GET THERE
The nearest town from Dachigam is Srinagar which is 22km
away and the capital of Jammu & Kashmir. The nearest
railhead is located in Jammu, which is 200 kms away from
Dachigam National Park. The nearest airport is also at
Srinagar. The nearest town to Kanha is Mandla (65 km by
road). The nearest railway junction from Kanha is Jabalpur,
which is about 160 kms away, while the nearest airport
is in Nagpur about 266 kms.
