CORBETT NATIONAL PARK


In the state of Uttar Pradesh, at the base of the Himalayas the Paltidun valley is located the Corbett National Park which was established in 1936, as the Hailey National Park. India's first National Park lies at the foothills of Himalayas and spreads over an area of 520 sq. kms along the banks of Ramganga river. The tigers are the main attraction of the park, and Ramganga is the home of prehistoric reptiles too, whereas the other carnivorous include the Leopard, Bear, Hog, Sambar, Muntjac, Fox, etc. Over 50 mammals, 580 birds and 25 reptile species have been listed in the Corbett National Park. Birds such as Ducks, Snipe, Egrets, Herons, Spotted Eagle, Harrier, Woodpecker, Darter, Cormorants and Thrushes and the lake of the park also attracts a large number of other species of water birds.



The insect life is also astounding, noticeable especially after the monsoons. But undoubtedly, the jewel of the Corbett is the Indian tiger. It was estimated that in 1984, the tiger population was 90 in this park. The park opens from November 15 to June 15. Project Tiger, which was set up with the help of the World Wildlife Fund, was launched at Dhikala, in the Corbett National Park on April 1, 1973. This project was aimed at saving the Indian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) from extinction.


Other attractions of this area are Leopards as well as lesser cats such as the leopard cat, jungle cat, fishing cat are also found here. The sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, dhole, jackal, yellow throated marten, Himalayan palm civet, Indian grey mongoose, common otter, porcupine, clacktaped hare.The National Park offers invaluable experiences for adventurous and serious-minded wildlife - buffs, photographers and anglers.

HOW TO GET THERE

One can find Ramnagar as the nearest railway station, which is about 50 kms from the Park. The nearest airport is the Delhi Airport. New Delhi is a six hour drive.
