BANDIPUR
WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The Bandipur wildlife sanctuary is situated
in Karnataka. It is located on the highway connecting
Mysore and Ooty, at the foothills of the western Ghats.
It sprawls over an area of about 800 sq kms. It is the
part of larger National Park which also include the sanctuaries
of Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Wynad in Kerala. A scheme
was launched in 1973, the Project tiger and this is one
of the 15 sanctuaries across India which was selected
for this Project. The Sanctuary offers a rich wildlife
habitat. |

Bandipur
has a fairly open forest area. Bandipur houses a variety
of animals and plants. After the park was brought under
the Project Tiger Scheme, the number of tigers have increased
at a steady pace. Chital, sambar, gaur, leopard, wild
boars, a large variety of birds, many rare species of
insects also add to the beauty of the Park. |

TIME TO VISIT
During May and June, and again from
September to November.
HOW TO GET THERE
The park can be approached by road
from the nearest town Gundulpet, which is 20 kilometres
away. One can find the nearest railhead at Nanjangud,
which is 55 kilometres away, and the nearest airport is
80 kilometres away. |
