Places to Avoid

- Lonely spots are to be avoided in the night, if alone.

- Tourist monuments and historical spots are best avoided at non - visiting hours.

General Safety Tips

Do not hesitate to ask for assistance, if in distress or in doubt of any kind.

- Trust the men in uniform or anyone appearing moderately decent in appearance.

- Head for a crowded area to be and feel more secure.

- Keep information of all important telephone numbers with you, especially help-lines and voluntary-organisations,including the police. Any unknown destination should be studied on the map, before disembarking from the transport.

Senior Citizens

If health permits, any elderly person can safely make plans of travelling in India. There are several services that are available for an elderly traveller in India. This is due to the fact that in this country, the local tourist population is invariably a cross section of all ages; with the seniors constituting a sizeable bulk. It comes from the Indian custom of travelling to holy places after having lived a full life of a family man, in order to cleanse one's soul at the different Dhams or holy shrines. It also coincides with post-retirement leisure travel. Unique services such as palanquin bearers, may be availed of to reach holy places, atop high hills in the Himalayas, if age doesn't permit trekking up a steep slope. Elderly people are also seen atop mules on their trek upwards to the shrine of Vaishno Devi in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Recommended Clothing

-Avoid short skirts as they might be frowned upon by the local residents including the Indian women.

- It is better to wear loose slacks than tight-fitting jeans. Not only are they comfortable, but they also attract no extra attention from onlookers.

- Avoid unnecessary exposure of the skin as it is not only unaesthetic, but also invites unnecessary comments.

Things Not to do

- Try not to reach a new destination after dusk, take some time to find a place to stay.

- Try not to get friendly with waiters, porters and hotel attendants, as such behaviour might be misconstrued as overfriendliness.
