Erosion Nature Conservation

Top-soil erosion has been critical in the country and great efforts are being made to undo the harm caused by humans and the proliferation of human settlements in the hilly regions.

- One should not create his/her own trails through previous un-trailed parts, especially down slopes, when trekking. This might lead to the formation of a watercourse during heavy rains and lead to erosion and landslide eventually.

- Avoid walking around mud patches, as this would increase their size every time it is done. Walk through it instead.

- Take care not to uproot any foilage, especially regenerating ones. Do not pluck out any of it, in the hills.

- Camp fires are not forbidden, but as in the western world, the same do's and don'ts apply here. Put off camp fires before proceeding further on the trek / trail. Never leave the site with an ember burning. That, during a dry season could lead to catastrophic forest fires.

- By cutting wood one will be contributing to deforestation. It is recommended that one carries his/her own supply of fuel (kerosene or disposable gas cylinders) for all cooking needs, etc. Appropriate clothing should be utilised to keep oneself warm. Avoid a situation, where lighting a fire is necessary in order to keep warm.

Personal Safety

Keep all emergency telephone numbers and contacts to get through to, in case of any emergency.

On the whole, personal safety will remain a function of what one does to avoid dangerous situations .

Regions with a history of insurgency / terrorism, especially the border areas of Jammu & Kashmir are to be avoided. The risk of kidnapping for political reasons exists here.

 Washing

- One should wash clothes using a bio-degradable soap and far away from a water source.

- Use sand, soil and snow to wash utensils.

- Avoid using detergent and toothpaste near water sources.

- Carry a personal water container.

 Drugs & Prostitution

Possession of any drug in excess, is considered to be an offence here.

Once convicted, the minimum term is 10 years. The law enforcers are particularly strict nowadays, on this aspect.

Travellers are advised not to indulge in prostitution or/and other related offences. Such offences are punishable by law.

 Rubbish

A rubbish bag is carried and it is used to put in all forms of refuse, like: Plastic and paper wrappers, aluminnium foils, fruit peels, cigarette butts, etc.

- Avoid burying non-degradable rubbish as it is harmful for the soil and gets exposed with even a short spell of rain. The soil and the animals get potentially poisoned, due to this.

- Avoid the use of disposable plastic water bottles. Carry a permanent container for water and use purifiers like iodine drops to cleanse the water before drinking.

- Kindly carry out used personal things like condoms, tampoons and sanitary napkins.

Wildlife Conservation

Today the country faces problems of not only habitat protection and poaching, but also an enormous task of undoing all the harm that has been done earlier on.

- Do not kill any wild animal, not even domestic ones, anywhere in India.

- Never indulge in hunting. Do not encourage or be a part of an illegal group of hunters.

- Do not accept or buy any product like skin, claws, bones, horns or ivory from a local seller. They are all illegal, banned and are an outcome of senseless poaching as well as killing of endangered species.

 Waste Disposal

Use toilets wherever they are available.

- Choose your toilet site in inhabited areas after informing the local inhabitants, the same applies to the use of portable toilets during treks etc.

- Take care not to contaminate any water source, by choosing a toilet site close to it. Take a place at least 150 meters away from any such source.
