| Touts |

There
are touts for almost every activity of the tourist in
India. Their incessant queries could prove to be irksome,
but please do not lose your patience with them. Instead,
try and ignore touts as much as possible.

| Theft |
|
Theft
is quite common in the country. Keep your belongings locked
and avail the facilities of the railway cloak room, where
unlocked luggage will not be accepted. Locking one's belongings
during train travel is a must. Most trains have the provision
for locking luggage through fixed chains below the seats.
|
| General Etiquette |
|
Take
care to follow some simple do's and don'ts, when in this
country. Knowledge of etiquette is not only knowledge
of another culture, it means according respect to your
fellow human beings.
|
| Pickpockets |
|
Beware
of pickpocketers in the main metros, especially Mumbai
and Calcutta. Crowded buses or trains are their best hunting
ground. Keep purses / wallets secure and always make it
a point not to carry too much cash with you while travelling.
|
| Religious Etiquette |
|
All
religious places will require you to take off your footwear
before entering the premises. In some cases, taking photographs
may also be prohibited, including the entry for certain
foreign travellers in some very orthodox shrines. There
are sections inside certain temples and holy places where
the entry to foreigners is barred. For example, the Sanctum
Sanctorum or the Garbha Kaksha, where the idol or the
icon is placed.
