The
capital of Rajasthan is popularly known as the `pink
city' because of the ochre-pink hue of its old buildings
and crenellated city walls as Rajputs considered pink
to be a colour associated with hospitality. Jaipur's
name, foundation and its careful planning was just because
of warrior-astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II (1699-1744).
Town well planning set down in the Shilpa-Shastra, an
ancient Hindu treatise on architecture and was designed
by a Young Bengali , an engineer and scholar by the
name "Vidyadhar Bhattacharya". It's an extremely colourful
city and, in the evening light, it radiates a magical
warm glow. It is a major attraction for the first time
Visitor. Jaipur has retained its strong Rajputana flavour.Jaipur
has massive forts, magnificent palaces, exquisite temples
and marvelous gardens

AMER FORT
| This
complex was built by Raja Man Singh, Mirza RajaJai Singh
and Sawai Jai Singh, over a period of about two centuries.
Overlooking the Delhi-Jaipur highway, the image of the Amber
Fort is beautifully reflected in the lake below |
BAIRATH
| Bairath
An important historical place with the excavated remains
of a circular Buddhist temple - unique in Rajasthani and
the earliest known temple in India |
CITY PALACE
| In
the center of the old city lies the City Palace occupies
a large area, divided into a series of courtyards, gardens,
and buildings. The outer wall was built by Maharaja Jai
Singh II. This major tourist attraction is a beautiful blend
of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. In the centre of
the palace, is the Seven -Storied Chandra Mahal, or the
Moon Palace, which provides a fine view of the gardens and
the city |
GAITOR
| Gaitor
is 6.5 km on the road to Amer. It houses memorials to the
queens in the Maharani-ki-Chhatri complex also there are
white marble cenotaph of Maharajah Jai Singh II the most
impressive and is decorated with carved peacocks. Next to
it is the cenotaph of his son., the island palace-Jal Mahal
built by Sawai Madho Singh as a pleasure spot at the centre
of the Man Sagar Lake, and the Kanak Vrindavan complex of
temples and gardens |
GALTA
| The
old pilgrim centre of Galtaji is set beyond the gardens
amidst the low hill guarding the city. The small temple
of the Sun god, built by Diwan Kriparam on top of the highest
peak, is visible form all parts of the cit |
HAWA MAHAL
| The
palace was built in 1799, by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh
the Hawa Mahal Palace of the Winds, is one of the major
landmarks of Jaipur and is outlined with white borders and
motif's. It is a five storied building . Hawa Mahal with
its pink semioctagonal and delicately honeycombed sandstone
windows is a good example of Rajput artistry |
JAIGARH FORT
| The
extensive walls, gateways and watchtowers of the fort are
seem to dominate the sky. I In the Jaigarh fort one can
go through many palaces, gardens, a granary, an armoury,
temples, a tall tower and a giant mounted cannon-the Jai
Ban - one of the largest antique Cannons in the country |
JAL MAHAL
| Jal
Mahal is opposite the Gaitor cenotaphs and has been set
in the middle of a small lake |
JANTAR MANTAR
| Jantar
Mantar was founded by astronomer-king Sawai Jai Singh II,
the last great classical astronomer in India, in 1716. This
Jantar Mantar is at the entrance of the City Palace. The
Yantras , modernistic structures are the unique creations
of astronomer-king designed by him and built by experts
to observe the movements of sun, moon, planets and the stars.
He founded five observatories and it is the largest of all.
Its massive masonry instruments can still be used to measure
local time, the sun's declination, azimuth & altitude,
the declination of fixed stars & planets & also
to determine the time of an eclipse of the sun. The other
Jantar Mantar's are at Delhi, Ujjain, Mathura & Varanasi |
NAHAR GARH
| The
Fort beyond the hills of Jaigarh, providing a fabulous scene
of the city Jaipur is the awesome Nahargarh Fort. Almost
of the old structures are now brokem down condition with
age but except the fine building added by Sawai Ram Singh
II and Sawai Madhi Singh II in the 19th century are kept
safely in a good condition. Some of the rooms in the fort
gives the spectacular sight of the city |
RAMGARH LAKE
| Rambagh
is a huge artificial lake which is 32km north east which
is created by constructing a high bund amidst tree covered
hills. It has been made up a idyllic picnic spot due to
its antiquities, its beautiful landscape, the temple of
Jamwa Mata and the ruins of the old fort especially during
in oils pools. |
SAMODE
| Samode
is an interesting spot for outings. It is beautiful palace
rebuilt and renovated and provides a fine example of the
Rajput haveli architecture. |
SANGANER
| This
small town is entered through the ruins of two 'Tripolias'
or triple-gateways. It is located on the Tonk road. The
town has a group of Jain temples with fine carvings. The
town is an important centre for craft, industry and produces
some of the finest hand printed textiles from units of block
and screen printers. This textile is popular all over the
country and abroad. It is noted for its hand printed handloom
industry using simple techniques. The designs of these hand

SISODIA RANI KA
BAGH
| Many
landscaped gardens were constructed by the kings in the
18th and 19th centuries along the road to Agra in the south-eastern
corner of the walled city. Out of those the most famous
garden is the Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh which was built by Sawai
Jai Singh II for his Sisodia Queen. It contains watercourses,
painted pavilions and tiered multilevel gardens |
VIDYADHAR'S GARDEN
| This
beautiful Vidhyadhar's Garden was was built in honour of
jai Singh's chief architect and town planner in a narrow
valley |

Jaipur
is barely 262 km. from Delhi Most travellers arrive in
Rajasthan via Delhi and make Jaipur their first port of
call. Jaipur is well connected by road, rail and air.
