The nearest
airport is at Coimbatore, which has daily flights to and
from Madras, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum.

Train
Trains from major cities
are connected to Ooty. The Nilgiri Express leaves Madras
at night, reaching Coimbatore in the morning, and continues
to the small town of Mettupalyam, at the foothills. From
Mettupalyam, the Nilgiri Passenger ( the toy train), also
goes to to Ooty.

Road
By car, the distances are:
from Bangalore (300 km), Mysore (170 km), Coimbatore (105
km), Calicut (187 km) and Cochin (281 km).
The best time to visit Ooty is from April to June.

the Airport
Take a taxi (pre-paid ones are available) from the airport
to reach Ooty.

TTDC and ITDC buses, taxis are the convenient modes of transport
from the station to Ooty.

From here, take a taxi, an auto-rickshaw or a rickshaw to
your hotel.
The best way to move about is by auto-rickshaws or taxis.
Ootacamund or Ooty is known as the 'Queen of the Blue Mountains'.
It is the most visited hill station of the south on the
Nilgiri hills, and is at an altitude of 2286 meters above
the sea level. The hill town of Ooty was discovered by John
Sullivan, a British Collector and later was developed into
a summer retreat by the British. Ooty occupies a strategic
location at the junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka,
three southern states of India. Ooty is famous for its scenic
views: rolling hills covered in pine and eucalyptus forests
and coffee and tea plantations.
The temperature ranges from 25 degree Celsius in summers
to near freezing in winters. |
