At a height of 1829m, Manali is located at a charming spot
in the Northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Manali, the town
is divided into the Old and the New Haveli. While most of
the old Manali city is occupied by Kullu Paharis, the New
Haveli consists of new buildings, mostly big hotels and
restaurants. According to a myth, Manu, the divine law-giver,
made his home at Manali, after the great deluge. The hill
resort of Manali in the Kullu valley is a great place to
holiday and to trek. With its apple orchards and distinct
Kullu culture Manali is among the more popular hill-stations
in India. Manali also acts as gate-keeper to the route to
Leh, over the Rohtang Pass, in the summer mouths. This route
debouches into the beautiful expanses of higher Himalayas.
Today, the city of Manali is largely based around Mall Road.
The National Highway-21 hugs the river Beas from Kullu passes
through the Mall in Manali. The Mall turns East across the
main bridge to the Naggar Highway. Manali has grown in a
linear fashion from old Manali in the north to Vahsistha
in the south. Model Town has a number of new [concrete]
hotels.

The cool and crisp climate of Manali attracts people to
this haven. Manali and the villages around it receive fairly
heavy snow in winters and can be excessively cold. July
and August are the wettest months here. |
